University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks says he has early stage prostate cancer.
In a statement posted on the university's Web site on Tuesday, Bruininks says his cancer was caught early at stage one and is highly treatable. He's scheduled to undergo surgery Feb. 1. He says he has an "excellent prognosis for a quick and complete recovery."
Bruininks says his work schedule may be "somewhat limited" in February, but he expects to resume his regular schedule after a few weeks of recuperation.
The 67-year-old Bruininks has been president of the university since 2002. He previously announced plans to retire in June 2011.
