Voters in the western Minnesota community of Watson have approved a change in city government, following widespread dissatisfaction with the current city council.
The measure passed easily on Tuesday, with about 80 percent of the votes in favor. The measure will change the city clerk and treasurer positions from elected to appointed. Supporters say that will allow the city council to hire an experienced person for those offices.
The vote came after months of turmoil on the City Council. One council member resigned. Both the mayor and the city clerk at one point also resigned, but then changed their minds.
Much of the town's turmoil can be traced back to an ongoing dispute over a vegetable garden. The city claims the garden violates a zoning ordinance. The garden's owner says the city's decision to take him to court was based on racial discrimination, a charge city officials deny.
