The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis says donations to Haiti earthquake relief from its 217 parishes together with online contributions have exceeded $1 million.
Earlier this month, Catholics were asked to contribute to Haitian relief either through collections taken up at their local churches, via mail or through the Archdiocese's Web site. Such donations are collected on behalf of Catholic Relief Services, a first-line responder to natural disasters around the world.
St. Paul-Minneapolis Archbishop John Nienstedt says the level of donations from Twin Cities-area Catholics are a testament to the charity of Catholics in a time when many are suffering from tough economic times themselves.
