Despite his friends' efforts, a Marshall teenager has been deported to El Salvador.
Jairo Yanes, 17, was a junior at Marshall High School until last Monday. That's when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents caught up with him.
Yanes was taken to a Carver County detention center. Classmates and teachers say they learned Yanes was flown to Miami on Friday morning, then back to El Salvador that night.
Friends and classmates recently learned that Yanes and his mother and younger brother came to the U.S. illegally. When Yanes came home from a choir tournament on Feb. 21, his family had left.
Friends urged Yanes to stay to see if he could avoid being deported.
A Facebook page has been created to show support for Yanes.
