Student's death ruled an accident

A Hennepin County medical examiner's report confirms that what the mother of a University of Minnesota student had suspected. That her son was experimenting with drugs and died accidentally.

The report says 22-year-old Nick J. Owens of Bethel died of morphine toxicity. His mother, Mary Jo Owens, says her son made an "awful mistake" and probably thought he was invincible because he was so strong. She tells WCCO-TV that her son was all-conference academically and athletically at St. Francis High School, played for the university's club rugby team and was an avid weightlifter.

Owens says her son once told her how easy it was to get prescription medications and other drugs at college parties. He died last month at home.
