Tax checkoff for food shelves gets look in Minn.

A Senate panel considers a proposal that would let taxpayers donate to food shelves and homeless prevention programs on their tax returns.

The bill from Sen. Ellen Anderson gets a hearing in the Senate Taxes Committee on Thursday.

Individual taxpayers could give $1 or more through a checkoff on income tax returns or claims for property tax refunds. Corporations could make donations through corporate income tax returns.

Donating would increase the amount of tax owed or decrease a refund.

The idea came from a junior at a St. Paul high school. Anderson is a Democrat from St. Paul.
