Metro mail carriers up 'Stamp Out Hunger' goal

Twin Cities letter carriers hope to break last year's haul at the annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive Saturday.

Postal customers are asked to leave a bag of nonperishable, unbreakable food items for letter carriers to pick up that day as they deliver mail. The donations benefit Second Harvest Heartland, the largest hunger-relief organization in the Upper Midwest.

More than 2,000 letter carriers will pick up food donations in the Twin Cities metro area.

This year, letter carriers hope to collect 1.3 million pounds of food in the seven-county metro area. That's up from last year's collection of nearly 1.1 million pounds.

"Stamp Out Hunger" is now in its 18th year. Letter carriers nationwide collected more than 73 million pounds of food last year.
