Fourth District DFL Congresswoman Betty McCollum spoke about the new health care law's benefits for seniors at a St. Paul Senior Center Monday.
Her talk came on the eve of a national town hall meeting that President Barack Obama will have with older Americans Tuesday morning. One of the residents at Episcopal Homes where McCollum spoke, Al Kvaal said he supports the new law and wishes Congress had passed it sooner.
"I know people in Western Minnesota who felt they couldn't afford health insurance and so did not go to the doctor because they couldn't afford it," Kvaal said. "And then X number of months or years later, they died. And both gentlemen were in their 50s."
Other residents said they also supported the new law, but are concerned that it will cost too much. House Republican leaders have introduced a bill to repeal the law.
