Labor dignitaries dedicate Minn. workers memorial

Minnesota has a new memorial on state Capitol grounds, this one a labor-sought garden that honors workers who lost lives on the job.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale joined labor and community leaders Tuesday to dedicate the Minnesota Workers Memorial Garden. He noted the significance of the garden's presence in view of the Capitol.

The centerpiece is a 20-stone wall with hand-etching. It is just east of a plaza recognizing to World War II veterans. Other memorials on the grounds honor veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars as well as a monument to fallen police officers and women's suffrage.

The ceremony capped a 25-year pursuit begun by former AFL-CIO president David Roe. The $423,000 project was paid for with a combination of state, federal and private donations.
