In front of the student union I meet freshman roommates John Phillips and Kern Walster at the Nice Ride tent.
I'm drawn to them after hearing John proclaim the bike subscription program as as both "cool" and "awesome".
Neither Twin Cities native has a car -- John hasn't even gotten around to getting his drivers license -- and both like the idea of paying a subscription that allows them to "borrow" bikes from kiosks around the city.
Looks like parking permits haven't changed much since my day, when they were more of a hunting license than anything else.
"They're really expensive, and there's nowhere to park," Kern says.
Sounds sensible. From the way the two describe it, though, I wonder whether the "no place to park" holds true for bike racks as well. I'll keep my eyes open.
