U students to turn parking spot into green space

Students from the University of Minnesota plan to transform a parking spot into a temporary park Friday.

It's all part of PARK(ing) Day, designed to show the importance of urban open space.

The students are in the College of Design's department of landscape architecture. Their group, Students for Design Activism, is a new official student organization on campus.

On PARK(ing) Day, activists turn metered parking spots into temporary parks.

The students plan to demonstrate how plants can be used to treat urban runoff before pollution enters the Mississippi River.

The event takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Pillsbury Drive Southeast near the University of Minnesota Field House on the East Bank campus.
