Fire leaves MSU Moorhead students homeless

More than a dozen Minnesota State University students have been displaced by the South Fargo apartment fire two days ago, university spokesman Doug Hamilton said.

No one was injured.

The apartment building was off-campus, and university officials are trying to help the students who've lost their housing, clothing and books. They've replaced $1,000 in text books belonging to one fire victim, Hamilton said, and are arranging housing for some on campus. Others may be living with family and friends -- or still looking for a place to stay.

He didn't have full details, so I've got a call in to one of the VPs there.

Apparently, on the night of the fire some administrators went through school records to see who lived in the building and then contacted them however they could -- usually by cell phone.

Each has been assigned an administrator to help them sort things out -- including academic issues such as classes because of the fire..

That may apply to Jennifer Keney, a senior majoring in psychology, who is still driving around town trying to get her life sorted.

"I haven't gone back to class yet," she said.

The university has paid for some of her books, she said, and she'll be staying in the dormitories for the rest of the term.
