Byron High School in southeastern Minnesota is celebrating winning a prestigious award for excellence from the U.S. Department of Education.
The school was one of six in Minnesota to win the Blue Ribbon award this year, and it was the only high school. Principal Mike Duffy says only 23 Minnesota high schools have won the award since it began in 1982.
The award was announced this fall in Washington, D.C., but Duffy says the ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday is the first chance to share it with the students and faculty.
He says the high school scored in the top 10 percent on state standardized tests in reading, writing and math. It also routinely beats the state average on ACT tests.
