Gov. Mark Dayton has picked a suburban police chief as his commissioner of public safety.
Dayton announced Friday the appointment of Ramona Dohman, who is currently chief of police in Maple Grove, as well as a past president of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association. She's also the first women to head the Department of Public Safety. Dohman said she'll begin the job with a clear goal.
"Certainly overall and over arching, the main goal is to make sure that citizens around the state of Minnesota, who are either traveling through or living in or working in our state know that they're safe and that their interests are being met," Dohman said. "But certainly public safety is at the forefront of what I'll be doing."
Dohman said public safety is a priority agency for Gov. Dayton, but she does not yet know if the budget plan he'll unveil next month will protect the department from cuts.
