Republicans in the Minnesota House have introduced a proposed amendment to the state Constitution that would require people to show a photo ID before they can vote.
The measure was authored by Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, who oversaw Minnesota's elections when she served as Secretary of State from 1999-2007.
Kiffmeyer said she has seen polls showing more than 90 percent support for the idea in Minnesota, showing that many Democrats like the idea as well as Republicans.
Republicans in the Legislature have also proposed an amendment to the state Constitution that would ban same-sex marriage.
If the Legislature approves the measures, they would both appear on the 2012 ballot.
Unlike other bills, proposed constitutional amendments do not require action by the governor to be placed on the ballot.
