Every Friday, MPR Movie Maven Stephanie Curtis talks to The Current's Steve Seel and Jill Riley about new movies.

Fans of the band The Hold Steady will recognize the title of this week's film: "Stuck Between Stations." The band doesn't have anything to do with the new locally-produced movie of the same title that is playing at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival. But like the song, this movie captures a sense of transition.

The first feature film from director Brady, Kiernan, "Stuck Between Stations" follows a young soldier and a graduate student who get re-acquainted during an nighttime walk through Minneapolis. After they leaving a concert at First Avenue, the two wander through familiar city scenes that Stephanie calls "magical".

Actors Zoe Lister-Jones ("Rebecca") and Michael Imperioli ("David") have the kind of remarkable chemistry that makes a film like this work, garnering positive comparisons to 1995's "Before Sunrise" starring Ethen Hawke and Julie Delpy.

With a beautiful ambient soundtrack by Grant Cutler (formerly half of the band Lookbook), the movie is best experienced with good speakers.

"Don't wait for it on DVD, "Stephanie says. "Go see it on the big screen, with the music surrounding you and the images of Minneapolis up there at night. It's something locally, made, people. Get out there and support it and watch it because it's good."
