State leaders meet to work on budget deal

Gov. Mark Dayton and GOP legislative leaders have started what they say will be an all-day meeting aimed at bridging their state budget differences.

A crew of nine entered GOP House Speaker Kurt Zellers' State Office Building quarters at 9 a.m. Friday. It included Dayton, his budget director, leaders of all four legislative caucuses, and the House budget committee chairwoman.

Dayton said little as he headed into the meeting but vowed to be "open- minded."

The group is trying to find agreement on spending and taxation levels in order to head off a government shutdown that would start July 1 if a new two-year budget is not in place.
