Fond du Lac Band wants reservation expansion

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is asking federal officials to expand its reservation to include a hotel it owns in Duluth.

The band already operates the Fond-du-Luth Casino in Duluth and owns the Carter Hotel next door. The tribe is asking the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs to designate the hotel property as trust land.

Mayor Don Ness says the band has shown a ``complete lack of consideration for the city and the residents of Duluth.'' Ness says the tax implication of losing the property to the tribe is troubling. The city collected about $1,150 in property taxes from the hotel this year.

Band chairwoman Karen Diver tells the Duluth News Tribune that the city has benefited greatly through a profit sharing agreement since it opened the casino 25 years ago.
