MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A Minneapolis art gallery is opening an exhibit by Native American artists reflecting on the 150th anniversary of the US-Dakota War of 1862.

The "We Are Here" exhibit features works by 20 Native America artists.

Hundreds of settlers and soldiers were killed along with an unknown number of Dakota during six weeks of fighting that broke out in August 1862. The war ended with the hanging of 38 Dakota men in Mankato on Dec. 26, 1862 -- the largest mass execution in U.S. history.

An opening reception will be held Friday at the All My Relations Gallery in Minneapolis. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 28 before moving to the James J. Hill House Gallery in St. Paul.
