The U.S. House of Representatives could vote yet this week on a disaster relief bill to help the nation's farmers who have seen their crops and livestock suffer this sweltering summer.
Republican House leaders decided to vote on the relief bill, but not on a one-year extension of the federal farm bill. The current farm bill, which funds more than just farm programs but a lot of other things like food stamps, school lunches, and conservation and energy programs, expires September 30.
House leadership has been caught up in internal rifts between Republican caucus members over farm payments and food stamps. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with DFL Rep. Collin Peterson about the bills. He represents Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District, is the ranking minority member of the House Agriculture Committee and has been working on a new farm bill with the committee's GOP chairman Rep. Frank Lucas.
