Usually when we talk about people choosing the sex of an unborn child, we talk about sex-selection abortions in China and India where parents prefer boys over girls. This is from a Science Daily report:
In the next 20 years in large parts of China and India, there will be a 10% to 20% excess of young men because of sex selection and this imbalance will have societal repercussions.
In the West, more parents have the option and financial wherewithal to use fertility treatments to choose the sex of their child before it is an implanted embryo. And 80 percent of them are choosing to have a girl.
Bioethicist Jeffrey Kahn joins us at 11:15 to discuss the bioethics of sex selection.
