State officials will meet with Lake Mille Lacs residents and business owners this week to discuss ways to manage a reduced walleye harvest this year.

The annual meeting between Natural Resources officials and the Mille Lacs Fishery Input Group comes a month after the DNR announced the need to cut this year's harvest in half.

DNR area fishery supervisor Rick Bruesewitz says Wednesday's meeting is a chance to exchange ideas on how to achieve that goal.

"The idea is to get good input regarding potential management changes on the lake," he said. "Everybody's concerned about the status of the fishery in general and how things have changed over the years. And I think overall discussion and explanation of what's going on is certainly something that they're going to look for."

The DNR will announce limits on the number and size of walleye that anglers can keep ahead of the season opener in May.
