Vandals spray-paint Minneapolis synagogue

Workers spent the day Wednesday removing graffiti from Temple Israel synagogue in Minneapolis. The vandalism happened on the second night of Passover, but it doesn't appear to be anti-Semitic.

Just after a Passover seder Tuesday night, someone spray-painted purple letters all over the building, including the stone columns that face Hennepin Avenue.

"We have security cameras around our building," Senior Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman said. "It happened sometime before midnight, and it seemed to show that it was one person."

The vandalism is still disconcerting, she said, because it happened during the weeklong Jewish holiday.

"This time of year historically and throughout the world, Jews have been targeted by vandalism and persecution, so in that way it is a stirring reminder of our history," she said.

Minneapolis police are investigating.
