Charges have been filed in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist in Minneapolis last weekend.
The suspect, Juan Ricardo Hernandez-Campoceco, 27, of Minneapolis, was charged with one count of hit and run, a felony, and with fourth-degree driving while impaired. Elyse Mary Stern, 28, was killed in the incident, which took place about 2 a.m. Saturday.
According to the criminal complaint, officers found Hernandez-Campoceco nearby, driving a car that had damage consistent with a recent collision. He appeared intoxicated, police said, and admitted to hitting a person.'
The collision, at East Lake Street and Cedar Avenue South, prompted a witness to call 911, according to the criminal complaint. Upon arrival, officers found Stern lying in the middle of the street, not breathing.
Stern was not wearing a helmet or reflective gear, and her bike did not have lights, police said.
Hernandez-Campoceco was taken into custody and agreed to a blood test. Results of the test were pending.
The Seward Cafe in Minneapolis was accepting memorial donations in Stern's name.
