Mayo Clinic expands Sports Medicine Center

The Mayo Clinic announced this week an expansion of its Sports Medicine Center in Rochester.

The Center will be housed on the third floor of the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center, which is undergoing a 100,000-square-foot expansion.

The new Sports Medicine Center will include multiple playing surfaces, including: wood for basketball and volleyball, artificial ice for hockey, artificial grass for turf sports and specialized lifting platforms. The center is also seeking to be one of the country's top hockey training centers and will include a Woodway Skating Treadmill which allows skaters to train on a smooth skating surface. In all, the center will encompass a 22,000-square-foot facility in downtown Rochester.

"This expansion will allow us to better serve our athletes with cutting-edge technology, facilities and programs," Edward Laskowski co-director of Mayo's Sports Medicine Center, said in a release.

Mayo's Sports Medicine Center focuses on sports and musculoskeletal injury prevention and rehabilitation, concussion research and surgical and nonsurgical management of sports-related injuries for elite professional to recreational athletes.

The new Sports Medicine Center is scheduled to open in the spring of 2014.
