"A handful of photos is an anecdote. Millions of photographs put together tells a story. And a story that carries statistical significance as well."

Ali Swanson is a researcher at  University of Minnesota's College of Biological Sciences. She's captured millions of photos over the past few years through camera traps in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. These heat-and-motion activated cameras allow them to research many different animals over a wide geographical area.

Swanson and other researchers are using 

 to tap the public's help cataloging the millions of photos that have been captured. See some of the photos captured by the camera traps below.
