The city of Minneapolis has reached a tentative settlement agreement with a preservationist group trying to block the demolition of Peavey Plaza downtown.

The city council needs to approve the agreement before details can be made public, assistant city attorney Greg Sautter said. It may take a few weeks before the item can get on the council's schedule, he added.

The council approved the demolition of the 38-year-old landmark in 2012 after it fell into disrepair in recent years.

In January, the Washington, D.C.-based Cultural Landscape Foundation filed suit to block the demolition. Members of the group say Peavey Plaza is listed as a historic site and should be renovated, not destroyed.
