University regents to review 5-year cost-cutting plan

University of Minnesota regents will review a plan next week to cut administrative costs over the next five years.

The plan is based on analysis received from consultants and university officials earlier this year.

State lawmakers ordered the analysis after a Wall Street Journal article in December scrutinized the University of Minnesota's administrative spending.

University spokesman Chuck Tombarge said President Eric Kaler will propose a target for how much the university will save.

"These reports provide the next update that is due to legislators, but also provide the direction for moving the organization forward in a more efficient way," Tombarge said.

For the first time, the university will also report on the compensation it gives its top executives.
