A 20-year veteran of Cargill, MacLennan has worked in the company's finance, risk management, energy and animal protein businesses in the United States. He has also worked in London and Geneva.
"Our present CEO said it best: 'David brings to this position his leadership, his vision and his breadth and depth of knowledge at Cargill,'" company spokeswoman Lisa Clemens said. "And David is also respected and well-liked across the company. He's very approachable. He's optimistic and has a good sense of humor."
MacLennan also helped lead the company through the 2008 global financial crisis, when he served as its chief financial officer.
The privately-held company has about $136 billion in annual sales and 140,000 employees.
