Nineteen years ago, Fatima Said fled the civil war in Bosnia and found herself a refugee in the United States. Today, she was at the White House being honored for her work helping thousands of immigrants and refugees who came after her get the help they need to make a life in the U.S.
Said is executive director of Project FINE in Winona, which connects immigrants to services and neighbors. on Thursday the Obama administration named her one of 10 "Champions of Change" for their work with new Americans.
Tom Crann of MPR News' All Things Considered spoke with Said right after the White House ceremony.
