Charges: Octogenarian murdered by 63-year-old assailant

Minneapolis police say a 63-year-old Minneapolis man beat an 86-year-old man to death earlier this month.

According to a 2nd degree murder complaint filed yesterday in Hennepin County District Court,  Bashir Yusuf Jama told police he went to the apartment of Jama Adan Mohamed on Oct. 8 to confront him about a dispute.

"The defendant described how he felt that a group of people from the community had been ostracizing him, that he felt J.A.M. [Jama Adan Mohamed] was the leader..." According to the complaint, Jama admitted to striking Mohamed several times over the head with a piece of metal construction material.  The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined blows to the head killed the octogenarian.

So far this year, there have been 33 homicides in Minneapolis.  That's four more than what occurred in the city at this time last year.  Police say homicide victims are typically acquainted with their victims.

However, this killing is an outlier because of the ages of the two men involved.

I've been gathering details on homicides in Minneapolis for the last six years.  The majority of both victims and killers are between 20 and 35 years-old -- young enough to be the children, grandchildren or even great-grandchildren of the two men involved in this latest tragedy.
