The Minneapolis Police Department on Thursday launched an app and a texting program for smart phones that allow users to submit anonymous tips to police.
“When someone feels afraid to come forward, or simply feels like they don’t want to get involved --- this can be a great way to pass information on,” Deputy Chief Kris Arneson said in a news release.
The app and texting number provide two-way interaction between the tipster and MPD. All information about the sender is encrypted and no cell phone number, IP address or email address is collected, the department said.
To report an anonymous tip, send a text to 847 411 (TIP 411). In the text, enter MPD, followed by a space, and the tip.
The free smart phone app, called MPD tip, is available on iPhone and Android cell phones through the app store or Google Play.
“Tip411 has been very successful for other police departments across the U.S.,” Arneson said in the statement. “We are excited to offer this tool to the citizens of Minneapolis as a way to communicate with MPD and work together to solve and prevent crimes.”
