Even without a hit, Fulks learned a thing or two in Nashville

Musician Robbie Fulks has been kicking around the fringes of country music for 30 years. In the '90s, he spent time on Nashville's Music Row, trying to write the next hit for country stars.

He doesn't have the warmest memories of that time. In fact, Fulks' departure from Music Row is arguably the most famous thing he did there — he recorded a kiss-off song to Nashville that struck a chord with people everywhere who were unhappy with their jobs.

His stay in Nashville did, however, teach him how to build a song. He's put his knowledge to use in his latest release, "Gone Away Backward." Fulks plays the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Friday night.
