The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has identified the man shot and killed by Orono police outside the home where a prominent Twin Cities physician was found dead.
Authorities say 74-year-old Stephen Larson, a gynecological surgeon, was killed in his home on at 1005 Heritage Lane in Orono just before 9 p.m. Friday.
Police said they arrived at Larson's home a short time later and found a man in the front yard with a handgun. Police said shots were fired and the man, now identified as 30-year-old Ted Hoffstrom of St. Anthony, was killed by police at Larson's home.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner listed multiple gunshot wounds as the cause of death for both men. No one else was hurt in the incident.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case. So far, authorities have not said what Hoffstrom was doing at Larson's home, what the connection might be between the two men or what they think happened before police arrived.
Larson practiced at Fairview Ridges and Southdale hospitals, headed a private practice and was a professor at the University of Minnesota's Medical School.
The Sheriff's Office has scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. Monday to update the investigation.
