In April, Dave and Amy Freeman completed a three-year outdoor adventure, earning National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year honors. The Minnesota couple paddled kayaks and mushed teams of dogs across North America, all the while giving scores of elementary school classrooms updates on their trek — even letting the kids choose which route to take.
Their 11,647-mile "North American Odyssey," which started in Bellingham, Wash., in 2010, is part of Wilderness Classroom, an online program Dave helped to start back in 2001. Wilderness Classroom's stated mission is "to instill a lifelong appreciation of the natural world while improving basic skills like reading, critical thinking, and communication by highlighting the joy of discovery," and they try and fulfill it by virtually taking classrooms along with them on expeditions.
Dave and Amy Freeman join The Daily Circuit to talk about their trip and odysseys to come.
