Sieben won’t be Dayton’s running mate

The recent speculation that DFL Gov. Mark Dayton might pick state Sen. Katie Sieben as his running mate has come to an abrupt halt.

Sieben’s name surfaced after Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon announced this month that she would not join Dayton on the campaign trail again this year. Seiben had previously declined comment on the matter. Then today she sent out a news release, taking her name out of consideration.

“I will not be a candidate for lieutenant governor,” Sieben said. “However, as assistant majority leader I will work closely with the governor and fellow members of the Legislature on economic priorities like raising the minimum wage and job creation. I’m proud to represent the fine people of Senate District 54, and look forward to a productive legislative session.”

Sieben also said that she is confident that Dayton will be successful in his re-election bid. She pledged to help his campaign in whatever way she can.

Shortly before the announcement, Dayton was deflecting questions from reporters about his search for a new running mate.

“I’m not going to get into speculation,” Dayton said.

However, the governor said he might make his selection known before his pending hip surgery, which is scheduled for Thursday morning in Rochester.
