State lawmakers from throughout the nation will gather in Minnesota for four days this summer.

The National Conference of State Legislatures is holding its 40

th

annual summit in Minneapolis. The bipartisan event will run August 19-22, and organizers are estimating 6,000 attendees. During a news conference today, House Speaker Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis said he was thrilled to be involved in hosting a convention that he has attended several times in other cities.

“You do get a chance to work on policy issues in an atmosphere that’s different than you get sometimes at the state Capitol when politics really heat up,” Thissen said. “You can work on things in a way that digs into the policy, and also share experiences with other states that quite frankly often are very different than we have here in Minnesota.”

Thissen said the host committee is trying to raise up to $1.8 million, mostly from Minnesota corporations, to help pay for the convention. But they’re also expecting a big return for the local economy. Rep. Kelby Woodard, R-Belle Plaine, said the overall economic impact could top $9 million.

You’re going to have people from all over the country that want to experience Minnesota,” Woodard said. “They want to experience our restaurants. They want to experience our museums. They want to experience what we all know makes us a special place.”

Organizers said the summit will feature more than 100 sessions on policy issues.
