The child who fell 11 floors out of a Minneapolis apartment earlier this month is in satisfactory condition as he recovers at Hennepin County Medical Center, according to hospital spokeswoman Christine Hill.
One-year-old Musa Dayib fell from the balcony of his family's high rise apartment in Riverside Plaza in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis on May 11.
Neighbor Osman Ahmed said that according to the family, Dayib is expected to be released from the hospital Friday. Ahmed is also president of the apartment's tenant association.
"The baby is recovering well," Ahmed said.
Dayib began in critical condition after the fall, when he suffered multiple fractures in his spine, arms and ribs, and had a concussion. He also has a punctured lung, Hill said.
Dr. David Templeman, orthopedic surgeon at Hennepin County Medical Center who operated on Dayib, said it was a miracle that the baby survived. He landed on the ground and not concrete, which may have helped. The baby's young bones which are partially cartilage may have also absorbed the shock, Templeman said.
It's not clear if the child slipped through or climbed over the top of the railing at Riverside Plaza. The railing on the apartment's balcony is up to code, according to Minneapolis officials.
