Metro Transit says Northstar commuter rail service has been cancelled today, due to a freight train derailment.
The rail cars were empty, and there were no reported injuries.
A BNSF train derailed between Elk River and Ramsey this morning, and the damaged cars are blocking the tracks. Metro Transit says limited bus replacement service is available, but the buses will have limited capacity and won't be running on a regular schedule.
Northstar Link buses from St. Cloud will take passengers from Big Lake to Elk River, and Metro Transit buses from Elk River will stop at the Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids, Fridley and Target Field stations. Metro transit and railroad staff will be at the stations to alert riders.
Metro Transit will have an update on weekend Northstar service later today.
