Work crews are on the scene of a water main that burst Thursday in the northern Twin Cities suburb of Robbinsdale, flooding part of County Road 9.
When a 36-inch pipe between Minneapolis and Crystal ruptured, water flooded County Road 9 near Railroad Street.
"That has caused water to come up through the pavement of County Road 9, and because of the volume of water, it's started to take a lot of the material from underneath the road, and caused part of the road to collapse," said Richard McCoy, director of the Robbinsdale Public Works Department.
The leak has stopped, but the county road is still closed from the Highway 100 interchange to West Broadway as crews drain the area where the roadway collapsed and prepare to repair it.
"They'll do an assessment of what it actually was that caused the failure, then what the plan will be is they will source the replacement pipe then arrange to have that put in as soon as possible," McCoy said.
Repair work could start as early as tomorrow if supplies are available locally, he said.
