Minnesota's 7th Congressional District is getting some last-minute attention from a major super PAC dedicated to putting Republicans in the U.S. House.
The Congressional Leadership Fund says it will spend $500,000 on ads against Rep. Collin Peterson between Oct. 28 and Election Day. Peterson is being challenged by state Sen. Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake.
The super PAC is chaired by former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman. It's the sister organization to the American Action Network, which is also spending money this election cycle to help Republicans, including 8th Congressional District candidate Stewart Mills.
AAN is technically a non-profit, so it doesn't have to disclose its donors.
“Minnesotans can look no further than Collin Peterson to find the problem with Washington,” Congressional Leadership Fund spokeswoman Emily Davis said in statement. “He thinks he deserves taxpayer-funded car leases and private plane flights. When he’s so out of touch that he thinks Minnesotans should keep Obamacare and he should keep his congressional perks, it’s time for Collin Peterson to go.”
That messaging echos ads that have already run against Peterson that paint him as out of touch with the district. The National Republican Congressional Committee has paid for spots that target Peterson's use of a plane to get around his district.
Between the Congressional Leadership Fund and the American Action Network, the organizations plan to spend $19 million in 20 congressional districts this year.
