Authorities say it's not clear why a Fergus Falls City Council member led police on a chase that ended when he crashed into a squad car and died.
The State Patrol says the incident began when 62-year-old Timothy Rundquist fled a state trooper who had stopped him for speeding around 5 p.m. Monday near Elbow Lake. Other law enforcement officers used stop sticks to try to stop him, but he continued to flee until he crashed head-on into an Ashby police squad car about 11 miles later.
Lt. Charles Backes says Rundquist was dead at the scene. He says the Ashby officer was outside of his car deploying stop sticks, and no officers were hurt.
Backes says investigators don't know yet why Rundquist fled and don't want to speculate.
