For eight years, Joel Klein managed the nation's largest school system: The New York Department of Education.
As its leader, he was both praised and criticized for his business-minded approach to reform.
Klein was a Justice Department lawyer before he was tapped to lead New York's schools. In that role, was given a lot of autonomy to get things done.
He joins the Daily Circuit to talk about his book "Lessons of Hope: How to Fix Our Schools" and what he would like to see in the education system moving forward. From the book's introduction:
"For too long, too many with wealth and power have tolerated a broken monopoly, perhaps because it didn't affect their own kids...who were able to find better options."
He wrote about his experience in The Atlantic in 2010.
