Today's Morning Edition music is from Elton John's version of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," which was No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart 40 years ago today.
He was the second artist to have a No. 1 hit covering a song by the Beatles. Joe Cocker did it first when "With a Little Help From My Friends" topped the British chart. John Lennon, credited as Dr. Winston O'Boogie, played guitar on this recording.
Elton John has said that he stopped playing the song live because it reminded him too much of Lennon.
