Mathletes, hockey players find common denominator in St. Paul

The Minnesota State High School League Boys' Hockey Tournament may be the most anticipated high school tournament in The State of Hockey — it ended Saturday, setting an attendance record of more than 135,000 fans.

But there was another high school competition happening Monday that showcased a different set of skills — in front of a much smaller crowd.

No helmets, sticks or pads required — just scratch paper and a pencil.

St. Paul hosted the 31st annual Minnesota State High School Math League tournament, home to the Math Bowl.

Mike Reiners, the tournament's head grader, talked to MPR News' Tom Crann just a few minutes after the Math Bowl ended — and just before main tournament competition began.
