Today's Morning Edition music is from a song called "St. Patrick's Day," sung by Cyril O'Brien in a field recording made in Newfoundland, Canada, around 1950.
St. Paul-based singer Norah Rendell used historic recordings of obscure Irish songs like O'Brien's as the basis of her new album. This is her band's version of "St. Patrick's Day," from "Spinning Yarns." The album will be released next week.
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Rendell has a couple of shows Tuesday in St. Paul. She'll be at the Landmark Center Tuesday afternoon and at the Ordway Center Tuesday night.
