Fayneese Miller, dean of the College of Education at the University of Vermont will be Hamline's 20th president, the St. Paul university said Tuesday.
A social psychologist by training, she will be the first African-American president in Hamline's history and its second female president. She takes over July 1.
Before Vermont, Miller was the first coordinator of education studies and the founding chairman of ethnic studies at Brown University, where she served on the faculty for 20 years.
Miller replaces Linda Hanson, who is retiring on June 30 after 10 years as Hamline's president.
