Christopher Field, director of Carnegie's Department of Global Ecology, works on a tiny scale in the field. Instead of describing vast land or seascapes, he focuses on a 5-inch-by-5-inch square of grassland.
He's passionate about all the things you can find there. He clips and describes every blade of grass, every plant, every seed, every evidence of wildlife in that square.
He can describe the larger grassland that his plot is in and what's happening to it as the climate changes and the drought continues.
On MPR News with Kerri Miller, he discussed how he balances all his global climate change work with his 25 square inches of grass.
