Canada's governor general is making his first-ever appearances in Minnesota this week.
The governor general is a nonpartisan position appointed by Queen Elizabeth to carry out her constitutional responsibilities in Canada.
Governor General David Johnston plans to focus on education and trade during his three-day trip. His office estimates that trade between Minnesota and Canada exceeds $19 billion a year.
"I think one of the reasons that I'm making a trip like this is to accentuate the positive features of that relationship, and cause us all to say, 'we have such a positive relationship, how do we make it better,'" Johnston said on MPR News with Tom Weber.
Johnston is scheduled to meet with Gov. Mark Dayton and members of his administration today to talk about education.
