New documentary highlights stress, cost of caring for the elderly

Sunday is Mother's Day, when children are expected to get Mom a card or flowers or take her out to brunch. But a growing number of adult children are doing a lot more than that for their aging mothers and fathers on a daily basis.

As people live longer and longer, they need more care in their later years, and 90 percent of that help is being provided by unpaid caregivers who are usually relatives.

A new PBS documentary, "Caring for Mom and Dad," which airs Sunday in the Twin Cities, explores this trend and what it means for the future.

Many of the people profiled in the documentary live in the Twin Cities. So does the program's producer, Larkin McPhee. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with her about the project.
